The wealthy town of Southampton, on Long Island in New York, is facing new accusations of illegally blocking an affordable housing plan. According to a new lawsuit, the local government unlawfully blocked a proposal to build affordable housing for veterans and people with mental illnesses.
The developer behind the project is now suing Southampton, alleging the town is illegally discriminating against people with mental illnesses in violation of the Fair Housing Act and other federal housing laws.
According to the New York Times, some of the people who work in the Hamptons sleep in their cars or in encampments because they cannot afford reasonable housing in the affluent beach towns.
