On November 2, Managing Partner Sarah Jane Hunt moderated a diversity and inclusion panel for the Federal Bar Association-South District of Illinois alongside mediators Honorable Lisa Van Amburg and Melvin Kennedy, Esq., as well as Southern District of Illinois Court Attorney Megan Arvola.

The panel focused on alternative dispute resolution as part of Continuing Legal Education (CLE).

“We often talk about increasing DEI in law firms and on the bench. There is still work to be done on that front. But, where I see the legal profession lagging behind is in pushing for diversity, equity, and inclusion in mediation and arbitration. The settlement rate for civil cases is in the 90th percentile. More and more cases are litigated in arbitration. Having a pool of mediators and arbitrators that reflects the pool of litigants who appear before them is crucial to fair outcomes in the system of justice in which we work.”
