Missouri voters recently approved a ballot initiative to increase both the state’s minimum wage and provide workers paid sick leave, a major victory for worker’s rights in the state.
According to Proposition A, the minimum wage in the state will rise to $13.75 per hour in 2025 – up from its current $12.30 rate. Minimium wage is set to rise again in 2026 to $15 per hour.
In another win for employees’ rights, come May 2025 employers will be required to provide paid sick leave to their workers. The new law applies to all private employers in the state, regardless of how many employees work there. The new paid sick leave law will provide broad coverage to nearly all private workers in the state.
Workers in the state will soon earn paid sick time at the rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked. According to the proposition, the sick time can be used immediately once it is earned.
Employees can use sick time for their own illness, injury, or other health condition, or to care for a family member dealing with their own health concerns. The law will also require employers to provide written notice of the law to employees within 14 days of their state date.
Both the minimum wage increase and mandatory paid sick time are major steps toward stronger employee rights in the state. Employers across Missouri will now be held to a higher standard in ensuring employees earn the money and time off they are entitled to.
