Restaurant chain Cracker Barrel recently settled a discrimination lawsuit after the company was accused of discriminating against a group of elementary school students because of their disabilities during a school visit to the restaurant in Maryland.
The lawsuit alleges that the students were at the restaurant for a field trip to practice social and life skills when employees allegedly discriminated against them. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General said the teachers claimed the group “experienced delays and mistreatment because of the students’ disabilities.”
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General acknowledges that the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits places of public accommodation from discriminating against people based on their disabilities. According to news reports, Cracker Barrel denied the allegations but agreed to pay $7,500 to each of the affected students and is donating $17,500 to the elementary school, among other payments.
