A brand new law expanding protections for nursing parents – the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers – has just gone into full effect in the U.S. The PUMP Act gives working parents the right to a private space that is not a bathroom and adequate break time to pump while at work. Previously, a 2010 law had loopholes and only protected hourly workers who were able to receive overtime.
Now, this new law will protect an additional nine million parents in this country. If an employer does not comply with the law, workers will now be able to sue. Still, not everyone is protected. Contract workers and some airline workers are not covered by the new PUMP Act.
