The country has a new federal holiday — Juneteenth.
On Thursday, June 17th, President Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a national holiday. Earlier in the week, Congress overwhelmingly passed the legislation.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the day union soldiers told enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended and they were free.
This is the first new federal holiday in nearly 40 years and comes as the U.S. continues to grapple with institutional racism and social injustice.
