The governor of Missouri recently signed a law allowing landlords to discriminate against renters who receive public assistance, including tenants who use federal housing vouchers to pay rent. The move overturns local laws prohibiting this kind of discrimination, including in Missouri cities such as Saint Louis and Kansas City.

The change means that landlords can use applicants’ lawful sources of income, including Section 8, veterans’ benefits, and Social Security, in determining whether to rent to them. The law is likely to hurt affordable housing efforts across Missouri. Section 8 housing vouchers help low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities afford housing in the private market.
